There are many ways to have a healthy pack lunch box.

You may be back at school but lunchtimes don’t have to be dull and boring. Here are some tips for a healthy and tasty packed lunch..........

White bread may be your favourite choice but wholegrain or wholemeal bread is much better for you.

Try experimenting with brown pita bread, chapattis, bagels or rice cakes. You can also make wraps out of floured tortilla.

NO to heaping on loads of butter, margarine or mayonnaise – they are usually full of fat and too many calories. Instead, take it easy with a low-fat spread and before long you won’t even notice the difference.

Why not Sprinkle some black pepper or add some fresh herbs for extra taste. mmmm

A Low-fat sandwich fillings like tuna, chicken or turkey can be just as tasty as fatty meats like ham or beef.

If you’re a cheese fan, there are plenty of low fat alternatives ranging from cottage cheese to mozzarella cheese sticks.

If you are a vegetarian why not try vegetable pates like mushroom or chickpea and coriander? Nutritious and delicious!

All good things in moderation – cut down on the amount of foods that are high in fat and salt, such as crisps, chocolate and nuts.

You could replace them with pretzels, plain popcorn, or dried mixed fruit.

Always try to include salad, tomato or cucumber in your sandwich.

You could also replace the bread with a colourful salad. Mix it up with a variety of tuna, boiled egg, celery for plenty of protein.

If you’re not a fan of school dinners but want something hot then why not bring some soup in a flask. There are lots of varieties to choose from and you can even make your own.

A must to stay healthy is to cut down on fizzy drinks, as most are high in sugar. While they might not be as tempting, why not give fresh fruit drinks and bottled water a go? Not only is it good for your waistline but it much better for your teeth!!

Always have a piece of fresh fruit in your lunchbox such as an apple, orange or banana - remember that everyone should eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. You could prepare a fruit salad or add raisins and mixed dried fruit in your lunch bag.

Variety is the spice of life – experience with different meats, cheeses and fruits and vegetables in your lunch box to keep if fresh and interesting.

A varied diet is very important to ensure that you are receiving a healthy range of vitamins and nutrients.

We hope that this will help you find some new ideas for your healthy lunch.
